When you use the term “Oriental rug” you are almost certainly referring to a type and style of rug that originated in Persia, in the region that is now Iran. This area is the heart of the rugmaking world, with families handing down weaving skills and traditions from generation to generation.

“A hand-made Persian rug is truly a work of art,” says Scott Gregorian, third-generation owner of Gregorian’s Rugs in Newton Lower Falls, Mass., one of the country’s top importers of Persian rugs. “No other region produces rugs of such richness and quality.”

Among the most productive regions within Iran for the production of hand-made rugs are Tabriz, Isfahan, Nain, Bidjar, Heriz and Keshan, each of which has given its name to the styles of rugs produced there. Rugs have been hand woven in Persia for more than 2,500 years.

Gregorian cites the high quality of the wool used in making Persian rugs, as well as the region’s resurgence in the use of traditional vegetable dye that produces the lush colors used to create intricate rug designs. This helps contribute to the global popularity of Persian rugs, which account for nearly one-third of hand-made rugs around the world.

“We have an amazing selection of sizes, styles and colors of Persian rugs in our showroom that are sure to attract a great deal of attention.

There is a rich history of rug weaving in the mountainous land of Tibet. Yet the tradition came close to being extinguished some fifty years ago, when China occupied Tibet. Many Tibetans fled their homeland into neighboring Nepal and India, and it was many years before they were able to reestablish a rug making industry using techniques passed down through generations.

The unique weave of a Tibetan rug — different from any other rugmaking region — gives the rug a rich, tight and lustrous finish. Tibetan rugs are woven by wrapping a continuous length of yarn over a rod laid across the warps stretched on the loom. When the rod has been wrapped for its entire length, a knife is slid along the rod, cutting the wrapped yarn into two rows of pile tufts.

Traditional Tibetan rugs are made with vegetable-dyed, hand spun wool. This creates rugs that are thick and dense, with heavy, lustrous pile and deep, rich colors.

Not all Tibetan rugs are made for floors. Traditionally, Tibetans used rugs for seating purposes (called khadens), as wall hangings, even as saddles for the rugged mountain ponies that were so essential in their lives.

Gregorian’s has a superb collection of beautiful Tibetan rugs. We invite you to visit our showroom in Newton Lower Falls to discover the wonders of this extraordinary country for yourself. Call us at (617) 244-2553 if you have any questions.

To protect the investment you, your parents, or even your grandparents have made in your Oriental Rug, it is important to have the rug professionally cleaned every 3-5 years, or even more frequently if it is in a high traffic area. Dirt, sand, dust and moisture that gets ground into the rug can damage the wool fibers and shorten the number of years of enjoyment you will receive from your rug. A regular cleaning schedule also allows our professionals to inspect your rug for worn spots, weak areas and damage caused by moths and other insects. Early detection of these problems can result in invisable and inexpensive repairs rather than larger, harder to conceal work that may be needed due to too long an interval between cleanings and inspections.

That said, a hand-made Oriental Rug should not be cleaned like any other rug. It takes a careful process to remove trapped dirt and restore the luster to the individual fibers. Here at Gregorian’s we use a proven, environmentally responsible process:

1. Tumble – It’s just like it sounds! We gently tumble the rug to remove dirt particles.

2. Wash – We soak the rug in a solution of clear water and mild, biodegradable detergent, then lightly scrub to force out dirt. We avoid the harsh chemicals that other cleaners use to help preserve the rug and the environment. For an even more environmentally friendly process, ask about our “Pure Water Wash” process.

3. Rinse – The rug is then flushed with clear water to remove the soap and loosened dirt.

4. Dry – We squeegee the rug and hang it vertically for the most effective drying, at a constant temperature. This can take several days.

5. Fringe Grooming – Once dry, we wash the rug’s fringes by hand. No bleach is used.

Cleaning older rugs, flat weaves and those made of silk or other delicate material require more care and attention. Each rug is cleaned section by section, by hand. Silk is never rubbed, only daubed.

During the cleaning process we inspect the rug again and identify any areas of wear or damage that can be repaired or restored. We then will call you with our recommendations and pricing for your approval before doing any work.

My grandfather always said, “Take good care of your rugs and they will take good care of you.” Protect your investment and give your Oriental rug a long life by following a recommended cleaning schedule. Contact us by phone at (617) 244-2553, or by email at sgregorian@gregorianrugs.com if you have any questions.

2009 marks the 75th anniversary of Gregorian Oriental Rugs. Little did my grandfather, Arthur T. Gregorian, suspect that his modest rug store in Wellesley would grow into a business that would become a part of the fabric of the community. But he was so proud to have created something good and lasting, much like the rugs he loved so much.

We are celebrating this important milestone with special events over a period of several weeks, including an extraordinary display of rare historic rugs from the private Gregorian family collection, weekend wine and food tastings, and specials on rug cleaning and restoration services.

But the true celebration happens every day, whenever one of our loyal customers walks through our door to a warm greeting. For, despite the trappings of our huge showroom and thousands of beautiful rugs, the success of our business is truly based on the friends and neighbors who have made a Gregorian rug an important part of their homes and lives.

We appreciate your business and your trust, and look forward to celebrating the next 75 years together.

Did you know that the floor accounts for one-third of a room’s total space? This makes the floor an important decorative component. For centuries, handmade Oriental rugs have made a defining fashion statement in floor covering. Today, the versatility in patterns, colors, styles, materials and designs have made Oriental rugs a preferred choice among interior designers for both residential and commercial décor.

An Oriental rug can literally be the starting point for room design. Choose from the rich color palette of a handmade Oriental rug to set the tone for a room’s entire color scheme, including wall coverings, window treatments and furniture selection.

Pattern is another factor in setting the tone for a room. A traditionally patterned Oriental rug can be matched up with a formal furniture style, while a bolder, more modern rug pattern is perfect for contemporary furniture designs.

Incorporating an Oriental rug into existing décor is also a relatively simple process. The infinite variety of colors and patterns available in today’s rugs offer nearly limitless choices to complement a room. Of equal importance is the wide array of sizes from which to choose. You can cover an entire space with a room-size rug, or highlight sections of rooms with smaller rugs and runners.

Few other decorating options offer the variety, flexibility and lasting value of a handmade Oriental rug. A quality rug can set the stage for all that happens in a room, or can transform an existing room into an exciting new space.

I am proud to say that I am the third generation of my family in our business. While it is important to me to carry on this wonderful tradition, you might ask what advantage it holds for you.

Quite simply, because the art and lore of Oriental rugs is an integral part of our family, it enriches the shopping experience for you.

When you enter our showroom in Newton Lower Falls, you don’t get the feeling you are entering a cold, unfeeling retail establishment. In essence you are entering our family home, as a welcome guest.

As you explore our many galleries there is no pressure, no “selling” at all. We truly want you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the rugs that surround you until the “right” rug emerges and embraces you. Along the way, you can count on us to provide guidance and advice about the rugs you view, drawing on 75 years of family experience.

We want you to enjoy the experience of your Oriental rug as much as we enjoy bringing this treasure to you.

A Brief History of “A Little Part of Persia in Newton Lower Falls”

Arthur T. Gregorian, Inc. was founded during the Great Depression by my grandfather, Arthur T. Gregorian, the first of three generations whose widely respected business is a landmark in suburban Boston.

The company was founded on three enduring principles: handpick genuine hand-woven rugs from the best weaving centers of the world; continually strive for customer service excellence that sets us apart; foster consumer education and appreciation for the art, history and lore of oriental rugs.

In 1934, the first store was little more than a tiny retail space below street level in Wellesley. In 1940, the company moved to Washington Street in Newton Lower Falls, and in 1948 acquired adjacent property, the former C. F. Crehore paper mill on the Charles River. In 1965 and again in 1989, the original two buildings were expanded and today comprise over 40,000 square feet with 10 galleries displaying thousands of handmade rugs, along with rug repair and restoration facilities.

With roots firmly planted in the bazaars and rug trading centers of the Middle East, India and Asia, Gregorian’s offers every visitor “a little part of Persia in Newton Lower Falls.”

If you home has large open space — perhaps a great room, family room or finished basement — you can soften the space and make it more inviting without building walls. For centuries, interior designers have used carefully placed Oriental rugs to “define” large spaces by creating communal areas for entertaining, reading and conversation.

For example, an open floor plan often features a dining room that flows into a living area. It can be difficult to tell when you cross from one into the other. To alleviate this problem, place a subtly patterned Oriental rug under the dining room table (choosing a rug large enough to encompass the dining chairs, as well). Then select a room-size Oriental to create an “island” effect in the living room. Now you have clearly delineated the two spaces.

This can even work within a single large room. You can choose one rug to serve a cluster of comfortable seating around a fireplace, with smaller rugs spaced to separate a reading or television area, or under a home office desk.

The rugs you use don’t necessarily have to match, but they shouldn’t appear so small that the room appears fragmented. You can choose Oriental rugs of entirely different patterns and colors to clearly divide the room. Or select rugs in the same family of patterns and colors to tie together the separate areas.

We have lots more great ideas on how to decorate your home or office with Oriental rugs. We invite you to stop by our showroom to explore your many options.

But not all rugs called “Oriental” are true examples of the traditional rug weaving art. There are many imposters, and you should know what you are buying before choosing a rug for your home.

An authentic Oriental rug is made by hand, either knotted with pile or woven without pile. Rugs made by machine or any method other than hand-knotting or hand-weaving are not considered authentic Oriental rugs, even if they mimic the patterns and color of the real thing.

Over the past 75 years, my family has helped thousands of New Englanders discover the beauty and value of genuine Oriental rugs. From this experience we can offer the following suggestions to consider before you begin your search for the “perfect rug.”

Know the setting in which the rug will be placed. Is it a high traffic area? Is the rug intended to cover a broad space? Or will it be used to define a smaller area in a large room?

Understand your color palette. Oriental rugs are available in an amazing array of patterns and colors. If you are going to use the rug as the basis for decorating the room in which it will be placed, choose colors that are most attractive to your eye. But if the rug needs to fit into existing décor, choose colors and patterns that complement the colors already in place.

Measure carefully. Make sure you know the dimensions of the room into which you will place your new Oriental rug. You don’t want a rug that is too large for the available space, or one that is so small that it leaves large gaps around its edges.

Have a budget in mind. The price of an Oriental rug can range from a few hundred dollars to many thousands of dollars. Go into your search with a budget figure in mind, but be willing to be flexible if you find a rug that your find particularly exciting or attractive.
